What’s everyone think? Does a 6 speed manual improve the reputation? I kinda want one

It helps but it really needs a BRZ motor. 200 hp would really make it enjoyable without having to deal with boost-related maintenance or issues.

The manual makes it tolerable to drive. It needs a 1.6t or 2.4 na

They are seriously slow. Interior is looks nice, but some materials - especially the rear door cards and handles - feel cheap. Cargo capacity is fine. Easy driving experience overall. Just seems you can get more bang for your buck elsewhere to me.

The manual sucks  on the Crosstrek. Seriously, the most spongy and numb shifter in the world. Combine that with the asthmatic engine and you’ve got a recipe that makes for a numb drive no matter what the transmission is.

Slow, possibility of burning huge amounts of oil, small trunk for looking like a wagon. 10/10 would forester with a CVT.

It depends on how you feel about interior layout and hard black plastic for days.  It is a lifted impreza and while most people aren’t buying it for driving dynamics I don’t think a manual would make it THAT much more enjoyable to drive.

Dang, t hat’s a shame. I d on’t know much about the FA20 other than it’s in the twins, torque dip, and people keep complaining it needs a turbo.

If you need AWD but don’t need to get anywhere quickly, they’re great.

Otherwise, if you’re focused on road performance, just get a GTI, the interior and driving experience will be a bazillion times better. Add snow tires for winter.

If you’re worried about off-road, get a Jeep.

My wife has an Impreza hatchback. When the lease runs out she wants something where she sits higher. But I think she also wants something bigger as well. Who knows? She may just check it out and decide it's what she wants anyway.

I think it depends on what you want, really. If you want a WRX STI with a 4” lift, then you’re going to be disappointed. If you want a reasonably cheap, pretty good AWD for softroading, then you’ll be OK.

Have you driven the 6-speed? The old 5-speed was pretty terrible.  I’m still trying to figure out if the 6 is the same unit that’s in my Forester which isn’t all that bad to shift.

Cool colors and they sell well. Discounts don’t seem good on them, though. The 500X is very similar and a much better value.

The 6-speed in your Forester appears to be from the same family as the one in the new Crosstrek. The gear ratios are pretty much different between them, save for 3rd gear and the final drive. That’s likely one of the contributors to the difference in model numbers.

I was convinced these were awful until I helped a friend shop for a subcompact SUV and realized everything else in that class is *actually* awful. And that includes the CX-3, sad to say. Everything’s tiny, slow, and cheap-feeling for the prices . This is really just an Impreza (aka a compact) and that makes it that much better but I agree with other commenters: at this price point it still pays off to skip the “SUV”, go for a regular compact hatch, save thousands upon thousands, keep the room, and have a much better driving experience. The GTI obviously stands out for enthusiasts and can easily be had for Crosstrek money, but even an Elantra Touring or plain Impreza hatch are as good and way cheaper . The really annoying thing about the Impreza hatch is that it didn’t get the 6 speed manual (yet? I think?). So in general, not a bad car but I wouldn’t get one unless maaaaybe if I had very specific needs.

it is by no means a driver’s car, even rowing your own gears. i don’t share the feeling that the 5speed in my 2017 Crossrek is a horrible transmission, but then again i drove my karmann ghia with worn out shifter bushings for a while too. power is pitiful for attempts at spir ited driving. driving in summer is not great, as you can physically feel e ach and every time the AC compressor kicks on and sucks up available HP. I do live at altidude, so i’m down 8-10% from sea level for all things without forced induction. back seats folded down full time for the doggo gives her plenty of room. no temperature gauge and a digital fuel gauge. pretty good MPG for AWD- 33ish on the highway. driver sitting position is high- it is a crossover SUV more than a small hatch. no oil consumption at all in mine.

I don't agree with that last part.  If you want or need actual AWD, rather than some bias bullcrap.  Also, it's not that slow.

‘14 was the last year in the Outback for the USA. I believe it was carried over to the 5th gen in Canada. I got super lucky and found this car locally in December of ‘15, CPO with 22k on the clock.

I was about to order a Hyper Blue Crosstrek with the 5 speed. Then I drove a Crosstrek and my Outback back-to-back and realized the Crosstrek wasn’t more nimble, or appreciably easier to park, and had a really restrictive rear hatch design.
